Are there UFOs in Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico, particularly its western coast, has a long and storied history of UFO sightings, making it a fascinating destination for enthusiasts of the out-of-this-world. For those visiting Rincon and nearby areas, exploring the island’s rich UFO lore adds an element of mystery to the beauty of its beaches and sunsets.
The town of Lajas, located close to Rincon, has been a hotspot for UFO activity for decades.
The “Puerto Rican UFO Flap” of 1997, one of the most famous events, occurred in Lajas and in Cabo Rojo. Numerous locals reported witnessing bright, erratic lights and strange flying objects that seemed to defy conventional flight patterns. The phenomenon was so widespread that it became embedded in the local culture, with some even attributing these sightings to the region’s proximity to the Bermuda Triangle.
These incidents are not isolated. UFO reports in the area stretch back decades, with significant events occurring before and after the 1997 flap.
In 1980, there were numerous reports of USOs (Unidentified Submersible Objects), where witnesses claimed to see objects diving into the ocean. This phenomenon continues today, as some believe Puerto Rico’s unique geography—surrounded by deep waters and remote mountain ranges—makes it a prime location for UFO and USO activity.
More recently, in 2013, a particularly well-documented sighting near Aguadilla, just north of Rincon, caught global attention. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) aircraft captured thermal video footage of an object moving at high speeds both in the air and underwater. Despite investigations, the object’s nature remains unexplained, adding fuel to Puerto Rico’s UFO legacy.
Given the long-standing fascination with UFOs, visitors to Rincon can enjoy not only the island’s natural beauty but also the chance to experience its mysterious skies.
For visitors to western Puerto Rico interested in UFO sightings, the best place to start is the Lajas UFO Landing Strip. This spot, known as “El Ovniport”, was built in the early 2000s by local officials in the town of Lajas. While initially controversial, it quickly became a local landmark due to the area’s reputation as a UFO hotspot. Many UFO enthusiasts visit the site hoping for a glimpse of something extraordinary. The strip is located near the Laguna Cartagena Nature Reserve, a place where several sightings have been reported.

Additionally, the nearby Cabo Rojo Lighthouse and surrounding cliffs offer panoramic views of the sky and ocean, making it a prime spot for night-time UFO watching. Both locals and visitors have claimed to see strange lights in the sky or over the water in this region(
For a full immersive experience, some tour guides in the region also offer UFO-themed tours, blending the island’s natural beauty with its rich history of unexplained phenomena.
Have we seen any UFOs? No. While I do often want to say, “Beam me up, Scotty”, alas the opportunity has not yet presented itself. But who knows, maybe if you come and stay for a bit, you will get lucky 😉
