The name “Chino by the Sea” holds personal significance and reflects a blend of cultures, local traditions, and the natural beauty of our property in Puerto Rico.

My husband, being Taiwanese American, is often called “Chino” by native Spanish or Puerto Rican speakers. Though he is not Chinese, the term is colloquially used for anyone with East Asian features in many Spanish-speaking cultures, which adds a unique personal touch to the name. This nickname has become an affectionate part of how the local community views him, symbolizing the merging of our backgrounds and the island culture.

Beyond this, we’ve integrated chino in other ways that resonate with our property and lifestyle. One key aspect is our signature scent, an inviting blend of orange and coconut that we are working into layering in our getaway. This fragrance is a tribute to the tropical, sun-soaked ambiance of our location, as well as to the mandarin oranges locally called chinos.

These oranges not only symbolize abundance and vibrancy but also hold a special place in the decor of our property, where we are working feature them in various forms. (Remember, our decor is still a work in progress, so we hope to allow you to find surprising bursts of chino in some unexpected places.) We’ve embraced the color orange because of the vivid sunsets we enjoy from our balcony, where the sky often transforms into brilliant shades of red, yellow and gorgeous orange, adding yet another layer of personal connection to the name.

Our property sits in Rincon, Puerto Rico, an area rich in history and culture. The town, founded in the 18th century, has long been a haven for surfers, beachgoers, and those seeking tranquility by the sea. Over the years, Rincon has developed a reputation for its laid-back atmosphere, gorgeous coastal views, and welcoming community, making it the perfect setting for our dream to come alive.

Then there’s another personal aspect, which is just that my husband is sometimes (often?) silly and just thought the name sounded enough like chicken of the sea to make people laugh. So I hope you find his humor in it as well.

In essence, the name Chino by the Sea not only captures our personal journey but also reflects the colorful and vibrant history of this beautiful coastal town. By blending personal elements, like my husband’s nickname and our love for the island’s orange-infused sunsets, we’ve created a brand that’s both intimate and representative of the place we now call our second home.
